In softsediment marine communities, fishes crop extended feeding siphons of buried clams, potentially causing clams to reduce their burial depth, thereby enhancing their susceptibility to excavating lethal predators. We simulated cropping of the confamilial clams, Protothaca staminea and Venerupis philippinarum, by removing the top 40% of siphons, which caused each species to burrow 33–50% shallower than conspecifics with intact siphons. To examine subsequent consequences of reduced burial depth, we exposed cropped and intact clams to natural levels of predation in the field. Because of a naturally longer siphon, Protothaca, even after cropping, remained at relatively safe burial depths. In contrast, siphon cropping nearly doubled the mortality rate of Venerupis. Thus, while sublethal predation facilitates lethal predation, this linkage depends on specific life history characteristics, even among ecologically similar species.

Effects of predation by sea ducks on clam abundance in soft-bottom intertidal habitats

Recent studies have documented strong, top-down predation effects of sea ducks on mussel populations in rocky intertidal communities. However, the impact of these gregarious predators in soft-bottom communities has been largely unexplored. We evaluated effects of predation by wintering surf scoters Melanitta perspicillata and white-winged scoters M. fusca on clam populations in soft-bottom inte...

Juvenile flounder, Platichthys flesus (L.), under hypoxia: effects on tolerance, ventilation rate and predation efficiency

The flounder, Platichthys flesus, is the most abundant flatfish species in the northern Baltic Sea. Juvenile P. flesus are important epibenthic predators on shallow sandy bottoms in this area, and play an important role in structuring benthic infaunal communities by both lethal and sublethal predation. These areas are affected by periodic oxygen deficiency during summer and autumn when drifting...

Effects of Predator Foraging Behavior on Patterns of Prey Mortality in Marine Soft Bottoms

This study links spatial and seasonal patterns of mortality of the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria (L.), in marine soft bottoms with the predation rates and habitat use of its main predator, the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun. Patterns of predation on tethered juvenile clams exposed to the natural assemblage of predators were compared among different habitat types in fall and summer. B...

Dead zones enhance key fisheries species by providing predation refuge.

Natural stress gradients can reduce predation intensity and increase prey abundances. Whether the harsh conditions of anthropogenic habitat degradation can similarly reduce predation intensity and structure community dynamics remains largely unexplored. Oxygen depletion in coastal waters (hypoxia) is a form of degradation that has recently emerged as one of the greatest threats to coastal ecosy...

Invertebrate community responses to recreational clam digging

Marine reserves can help in maintaining biodiversity and potentially be useful as a Wshery management tool by removing human-mediated impacts. Intertidal, soft-sediment habitats can often support robust recreational and commercial shellWsh harvests, especially for clams; however, there is limited research on the eVects of reserves in these habitats. In San Juan County, Washington, several reser...
